Rio 2016 Paralympic Games gold medalists Roland Ezeuike and Lauritta Onye are on the shortlist for the 2016 Nigerian Sports Award scheduled for December 2 at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
According to the Chairman, Award Panel, Ikeddy Isiguzo, power lifter Ezeruike alongside two other members of the country’s power-lifting team to Rio, Paul Kehinde and Innocent Nnamdi, made the shortlist for the Special Sports Person of the Year (men) award.
Ezuruike and Kehinde won gold in the 54kg and 65kg class respectively while Nnamdi won bronze in the 72kg event.
For the Special Sports Person of the Year (women), three power lifters – Bose Omolayo, Josephine Orji, Lucy Ejike; and two field athletes – Onye Lauretta and Flora Ugwunwa made the shortlist.
Omolayo, Orji and Ejike won gold in the 79kg, 86kg and 61kg power-lifting events respectively. Onye won gold in the F40 Shot Put event, while Ugwunwa won gold in the F53/54 Javelin Throw.
Isiguzo added that the panel had concluded plans to give out recognition awards to deserving former sportsmen and women as well as sports management bodies as part of the activities lined up in commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the award.
